John Dernbach is a leading expert in environmental law, sustainable development, and climate change. He directs the Environmental Law and Sustainability Center at Widener University Commonwealth Law School and teaches international law, property law, and sustainability. Dernbach has authored or co-authored more than 20 books and over 50 articles, including Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization in the United States. He played a significant role in Pennsylvania’s environmental reforms, reinvigorated the Environmental Rights Amendment to the state constitution, and co-authored an amicus brief in Massachusetts v. EPA. Dernbach served on the National Research Council Committee and helped institutionalize sustainability at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He is a contributor to landmark judicial decisions, and his scholarship has been instrumental in shaping U.S. sustainability efforts. Dernbach is also the author of two writing guides for law students. Dernbach earned his J.D. from University of Michigan Law School.
