Stephen W. Pacala

Stephen W. Pacala is the Frederick D. Petrie Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Director of the Princeton Environmental Institute at Princeton University. He co-directs the Carbon Mitigation Initiative and is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Climate Central, a non-profit media organization focused on climate change. His research at Princeton focuses on global change, particularly on interactions among the biosphere, greenhouse gases, and climate. He develops mathematical models to explain ecological structure and function and currently directs the Carbon Modeling Consortium, which investigates all aspects of the global carbon cycle. He is most intensively working on a new model of the terrestrial biosphere. Dr. Pacala has received numerous honors, including the David Starr Jordan Prize, the George Mercer and Robert MacArthur Awards of the Ecological Society of America, and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and an honorary member of the British Ecological Society. He received his B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford University.
